Our select ranges of traditional hot tubs provide a natural approach using either a wood-fired or electric heater. Wood fired hot tubs are heated "on-demand" whereas an electrically heated hot tub is ready to use 24/7. Too basic? See our easy-to-use Cheap Hot Tubs range...
Wooden Hot Tubs are usually a timber barrel made from Cedar wood. Other hard woods are sometimes used, however Western Red Cedar is the most common material.
Traditional Wooden Hot Tub Barrel ConstructionAdvantages over a standard acrylic hot tub or fibreglass hot tub is that they are far more aesthetically appealing, especially for specific locations such as farm houses and retreats where a modern construction method is likely to jarr with the surroundings.
The main disadvantage is that the barrel is made-up of lots of planks banded together to form a cylinder. As the planks absorb the water, they swell and this is what seals the barrel. However, the seal is only as good as the height of the water, so if extra people get in, they will displace water which will overflow. Then as they get out, the water level drops so you have to top it up again.
Traditional Hot Tub InstallationAnother problem is the ability to regulate the temperature as the electrical systems (where fitted) are often more basic. The majority of traditional hot tubs are wood-fired. This style uses a submersible stove in which a fire is lit. The stove heats the water over a period of a few hours, however the lack of digital control system makes precise adjustment harder.
The round design also means that for a relatively large foot print, there is less space for occupants than in a standard square hot tub, although the barrels are often much deeper.
Advantages of a wood-fired hot tub are that it's drained and refilled much more frequently, therefore less chemicals (if any) are required in comparison to a hot tub which is refilled every three months. Also, the "on-demand" heating technique means that it's cheaper to use your spa, if you are an occasional user. There is also virtually nothing to go wrong.
